LEVEL II, AVALANCHE COURSE

National Ski Patrol

The Ski Patrol's Level II Avalanche Course is designed to train students to lead avalanche rescues and to provide them with comprehensive avalanche knowledge to support rescue decision making. Specifically, the training includes:

            Characteristics

Meteorology Fundamentals

Mountain Snowpack

            Metamorphism

            Energy &  Dynamics

Stability Evaluation

Safe Travel & Terrain Analysis

Self Survival and Rescue

Avalanche Rescue Organization

Special Medical Considerations

Avalanche Transceiver Search

 

Three days in the field will cover:

Snow Pits

            Hasty Pits

            Data Pits

            Stability Tests and Data Analysis

Probeline Leadership

Initial (Hasty) Search Leadership

Transceiver Search

Terrain, Routes, and Travel

Backcountry and Area Rescue

Control and Rescue Dog Demo (if possible)

Safety Procedures

The classroom sessions with be held at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Boulder   from 6:15pm - 9:45pm.  One field session will be held in the backcountry on Berthoud Pass.  

 

 

 

 

COST

$130.00 for ski patrollers.

$215.00 for non patrollers.

 The course fee includes the 2 textbooks, handouts.

 

TEXTS

Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain by Bruce Tremper, and Avalanche Rescue Fundamentals.  A fee reduction can be made for those who already have textbooks.

 

DIRECTIONS

In Boulder , go to the intersection of Broadway and Table Mesa (AKA South Boulder Road, when further east), and proceed west on Table Mesa. Turn right (north) on Stanford Avenue .

As the street begins to swing to the west,  turn into the church's parking lot on your right ( Stanford Ct. ) Proceed to the east side of the church, park, and walk down the sidewalk on the north side of the church.

PREREQUISITES

 

Students must have completed a Ski Patrol Level I (Basic) Avalanche Course or provide documentation of comparable education.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

 

All students must complete a written exam before receiving full credit for the course. The exam and texts can be sent out prior to the course for an additional postage fee. Please, arrange this with the course coordinator.

    Participants will need to have advanced intermediate ski ability and travel capability in both backcountry and downhill environments, mountaineering skis, or snowshoes in the backcounty and downhill, snowboard, or telemark gear for the ski area.
